Celebrate the opening of the original Carnegie Building 110 years ago!
Drop by the library for light refreshments while you browse the history of the library and see the DG Historical Society honor the library as a Downers Grove Historic Site.
The library is honored to be recognized as an official Historic Site by the Downers Grove Historical Society! The Downers Grove Public Library originally opened as a small reading room in the Farmers and Merchants Building on Main Street in 1891. In 1915, the library was moved to its current location with financial help from the Carnegie Foundation. Since then, the library has been rebuilt to accommodate the growing needs of the community, however the plan for a free public library, open to all, is still the foundation of DGPL.
